[The scientists at the Research Academy had said Aster had come to this area - somewhere a while northeast of the Toize Valley mines - for field studies a few times, investigating monster population in areas with fewer humans. Given a description like that Emil had visited the site expecting to see a stable ecosystem, if not always a peaceful one.
What he got instead was a disturbed community. A family of cockatrices fighting over territory with some vipers, a displaced elder dragon seeking space and getting aggressive about his lack of it...something was clearly not right here. The dragon told him that humans had been around lately where they hadn't been before, and so Emil went deeper into the caves nearby to see what was going on.
That was when he found the mine. Nobody at Sybak had mentioned anything of the sort so he'd gone in for a better look. It didn't take too long to realize that this area too was a source of Exspheres, and he was on his way out to talk things out with the monsters and send a few letters (surely at least Lloyd and Regal would like to know the mine was here) when the cave-in happened.
The megalith who had accompanied him through the mine shielded him from the worst of the damage - and she withstood the damage all right, thank goodness, but at the end of it that left him in the middle of a blocked underground passageway with only himself and a giant spiked tortoise.
This was going to take some work.]
